"Aka Maroiroi” (To be brave enough) Created as part of the Tātai Honga Carving Symposium 2024 Rarotonga Contemplation of the great Pacific migration from Raiatea to Aotearoa. The idea of an unknown future. Leaving a place that is known and understood, and embarking on an unknown voyage to a new horizon. To create a new future, a new life with new understanding. Our current place, this moment in time, is defined by the way we contemplate/interpret our past. Our future is what we choose to take forward with us. The past is never a sentence, but lessons. The present is a place of being, with moments of peace. The future shouldn't be one of fear but an uncharted unknown adventure. A future greater than self.

"Trinity"

"Trinity kumete" This Kumete (bowl) is inspired by the island of Rarotonga. there is a balance in threes. Rarotonga has a strong Christian follow from when the missionaries arrived here some 200 years ago. The father, the son and the holy spirit is the trinity know my most people. There are many other trinity's that are also held important to people and these are also celebrated in this kumete. Items come and go from a kumete, some for a moment and other will stay for a long time with others passing. This is the same with people in Rarotonga. As I was carving it a hairline crack appeared in the chest. "We have our faces that we project to keep ourselves safe. Once we truly know ourselves and understand that the only love we really need, is the the love for self. We will start to project our true selves from our heart.
